From 1923 to the beginning of 1940, Kane Brothers Dairy operated out of its dairy at 63 Shawmut Avenue. Shawmut Ave. may have been renumbered around 1937, as it was renumbered 67 thereafter.
On March 2, 1940, Kane's Dairy Company opened its first Kane's Dairy Bar at 1534 Dwight Street at the southeast corner of Lynwood Ave. The general contractor was William E. O'Connor of 116 Pearl Street. Kane's also opened an outlet at 72 Franklin Street in Wesfield.
The luncheonette had 16 booths, a soda fountain bar with high-top chairs, and a total seating capacity of 89. The restaurant featured lunches, sandwiches, milk, and Kane's ice cream creations. Mr. Kane anticipated about a dozen people would be employed, including a head cook and a short-order cook.
In 1941, the business was incorporated as Kane's Dairy, Inc. The incorporators were John J. Kane and attorneys William J. Millane and Russell L. Davenport.
In a bizarre event occurring in 1946, thieves stole a Studebaker being serviced at Oliver Auto Body at 1519 Dwight Street, then entered Kane's Dairy Bar and stole 300 pounds of sugar and a two-gallon tub of vanilla ice cream. The auto was discovered abandoned the next day in a field off Jarvis Ave, with the melting ice cream still in the car.
In September 1946, Kane's Dairy was awarded the contract to supply milk to the city's schools.
In May 1955, Kane's opened a dairy bar at 130 Sargeant Street at the northeast corner of Chestnut Street. This was situated in a tenement building in close proximity to both the Sacred Heart and South Chestnut Street schools.
Further expansion would occur in future years, as the business added more retail outlets. This will be the subject of the following chapter, which concludes the story of Kane's Dairy.
