Ridgewood Markets; A. H. Phillips; S. Solin & Sons ~ 1743 Northampton Street (Part 3)

The story of 1743 Northampton Street, from its 1924 beginnings, was one of grocery stores. Ridgewood Cash Market operated in the 1920s, followed by A. H. Phillips, grocers, from the first half of the 1930s to the mid-1940s, and then by S. Solin & Sons from the mid-1940s to the mid-1950s.

There's little information on these grocery stores, including advertisements, so here's a glimpse of each.

The Ridgewood Cash Market was the first business to occupy a storefront at 1743 Northampton Street. The market was owned by sole proprietor Stanley Popielarczyk. As one would expect, the market carried meats, groceries, vegetables, and fruits.

In 1931, Alvin H. Phillips, who owned several grocery stores under his corporate umbrella, operated the market. A.H. Phillips Inc. had grocery stores in Holyoke located at:

690 Dwight Street
253 East Dwight Street
37 Hamilton Street
163 Hillside Avenue
9 Martin Street
207 1/2 Sargeant Street
45 Vernon Street
1743 Northampton Street

In 1936, the market was transferred to S. Solin & Sons Inc. Samuel Solin resided at 253 Oak Street. Mr. Solin had operated a grocery store at 946 Dwight Street in the early 1930s. Esther Solin was the corporation's clerk. City Directories show the business remained with the Solins until 1945.

In 1946, the Ridgewood name returned when Morris Solin renamed the store Ridgewood Market.

In 1947, the store was sold to Daniel Ominsky, who continued to conduct business under the Ridgewood Market name until 1955. When Ridgewood Market closed in 1955, the company's assets were transferred to Russell's Market, located two doors away at 1739 Northampton Street.

The unoccupied space at 1743 Northampton Street was combined with 1741 Northampton Street to expand Ridgewood Pharmacy.
