Although Currier & Company had an abbreviated stay at 293-297 High Street, the Naumkeag Clothing Company continued the retail clothing trade at this storefront. This story features not only the store, but also the Gallup family, which was part of Holyoke's retail landscape for about 70 years.
The store was established in Holyoke by Zadoc A. Gallup, who operated Naumkeag stores in Salem and Gloucester. His nephew, Augustus T. Gallup, was the manager of the Holyoke Naumkeag store.
Like Currier & Company, the Naumkeag Clothing Company was a chain of over 35 stores spread across New England, making it one of the country's largest manufacturing, wholesale, and retail businesses. As its predecessor, the store carried a line of men's, youth's, boys', and children's clothing for special occasions, daily, and work wear.
The business was financially successful in Holyoke, reaching its best year ever in 1901. Augustus Gallup resided at 252 Oak Street during that year. The company celebrated its 10th anniversary in Holyoke in 1902.
The business continued at the 293-297 one-story High Street building erected in 1885 and used until 1905. The business needed room to expand, and the one-story building no longer met its needs. A change was needed, and this story will be developed in Part 3 of High & Suffolk.
