The last two blog entries recalled H.M. Cook, the proprietor of Holyoke Monument Works of the late 19th and early 20th century. From that time through the early 1960s, Brown, Stevens, & Fifield were prominent. Now, here's a look at the 1960s to the early 21st century, with the story of Holyoke Memorials, a monument dealer owned by Stanley Gallup.
Stanley Gallup was born in Evansville, Vermont, on July 5, 1927, and moved to Holyoke with his wife and children in 1953. The 1953 through 1960 Holyoke City Directories list his occupation as a chauffeur for the Edward F. Day Funeral Home, located at 134 Chestnut Street.
In 1961, he started his own business carving monuments. His newspaper ad advertised: Cemetery Lettering - Satisfaction Guaranteed. His initial business name was his own, and his address was his residence at 76 Carlton Street. Within a month, a new ad appeared, showing a business address at the Day Funeral Home. The business name was now known as Holyoke Memorials.
In February 1975, Stanley and his spouse, Winnie Gallup, purchased the property at 208-210 Sargeant Street. Holyoke Memorials would be located on the corner adjacent to the house.
The business building was constructed around 1924, with the initial occupant being an A&P Grocery Store until approximately 1934. At that time, A. J. Labrecque opened his market there. By 1948, the storefront was vacant. Ruckdeschel Press then occupied the space from around 1950 to 1966, when the dwelling and business building were sold to L & G Realty.
Then, in early 1975, the Gallups purchased the property and moved their business from Chestnut Street to this location. Stanley Gallup ran his business from here and was later joined by his son, Douglas S. Gallup. Stanley Gallup died in 1996. The company continued into the 21st century. Brian Gallup, another of Stanley Gallup's adult children, was commended in a 2018 online review for the services he rendered to a customer.
The home and business building were sold by the Gallup family on August 7, 2019, marking the end of 58 years of service to Holyoke Memorials' customers.
