When researching many of the businesses published to date, there is usually more than enough information to create a post of interest. On rare occasions, the data mining has to proceed to deeper levels. This latter situation was the case with the Adams Stationery Company.
The Adams Stationery Company was formed and incorporated in February 1919. Its incorporators included Patrick J. Judge and James A. Judge of Highland Manufacturing Company, 525 Main Street, Holyoke; Wellington G. Reynolds; LeRoy Adams of Brookline; Joseph A. Crawford of Medford; Walter Shirley; and John Shirley of Middletown. LeRoy Adams was elected President of the company.
The company started out in space furnished by Highland Manufacturing Company, and had approximately 15 employees. The authorized capital stock was $50,000, a relatively large amount in the early 1900s.
The company advertised in the 1921 Holyoke City Directory, showing it produced engraved stationery. This included "letterheads, business cards, college, fraternity, and personal monogram stationery."
On October 27, 1920, the company relocated to 27-29 Sargeant Street. It had purchased the three-story building from Grocer's Baking and Supply Company. The company had been using a portion of the building for its baking business, and the remainder as a tenement. Adams Stationery Company would use the entire building for its business.
In 1922, the Arthur J. Marcil Company, a retailer at 288 High Street, advertised that it was carrying the Christmas Card line produced by Adams Stationery.
Its main products continued to be business and fine stationery.
The company may not have been using the entire building on Sargeant Street as originally planned. In 1926, it attempted to rent a former grocery store at 29 Sargeant Street, which was equipped with refrigerators, bins, and fixtures. It was listed as a double storefront.
In 1930, a portion of the storefront, which was rented to a barbershop, was again available for rent.
It was about 1935 when the company was renamed the Adams Paper Company
In 1942, the company relocated to a suite of offices in the Hadley Falls Trust Company building at 56 Suffolk Street. It is not known whether engraved stationery production continued on Sargeant Street or if the company pivoted to a sales model. The company was no longer listed at 27-29 Sargeant Street in 1942.
Mr. LeRoy Adams continued to operate the company until it was liquidated on October 31, 1952.
