Rothchild's Store Fixture Mfg. Co. (1952-1963)

When writing these stories, there are times when family relationships are discovered in different businesses. This is the story of Rothchild’s Store Fixture Manufacturing Company and its family ties with a couple of previously posted business stories.

Louis Rothchild was born in Montreal, Canada, on February 11, 1911, the son of Wolfe and Rachel (Kaminsky) Rothchild. At age 12, his family moved from Canada to Springfield, Massachusetts, where he continued his education.

In 1930, Mr. Rothchild was living with his family on Carew Street in Springfield and working for an envelope manufacturing company. In June 1934, he married Sadie Stein of Hitchcock Street in Holyoke. Her father, Frank Stein, was a manufacturer of store fixtures and later founded the Holyoke Auction Company, which purchased furniture, fixtures, cash registers, display cases and other business assets at distressed prices for resale. He also operated Frank Stein & Sons.

For about 10 years after his marriage, Louis Rothschild worked as a salesman for his father-in-law. He was listed in City Directories as residing at 288 Oak Street, near the corner of Sargeant, from 1935 to 1953. The couple purchased a lot on Vadnais Street in 1950 and later sold the residence built upon the land in 1965.

In 1947, he was listed as the Vice-President and Assistant Treasurer of Doane & Williams in Willimansett. He continued in this capacity until about 1953. Around 1952, he started his own business at 136 Maple Street, called Rothchild’s Store Fixtures. The store sold sinks, cabinets, furniture and fixtures. The store also manufactured its own cabinets after relocating to 665 Main Street in 1953.

In the mid-1950s, the company moved to 377 Main Street. In all, he conducted business for 12 years, either selling or closing the concern around 1963. The St. Vincent de Paul Society is listed as operating a gift shop at that location in 1964.
