Patrick Kane was born in Holyoke on February 9, 1889 and educated at the Holy Rosary School. On April 30, 1912, he was married to Jane Eggleston, who resided at 31 Commercial Street. Mr. Kane was living at 94 North Bridge Street at the time of their wedding at Sacred Heart Church.
By trade, Patrick Kane was a self-employed electrician operating on Essex Street. In 1914, he purchased a commercial one-story building from the Thomas A. Edwards Estate at 530 High Street.
He also holds the distinction of being the first Holyoke Dealer of Chevrolets at his showroom, which he situated next door to his electrical shop. The auto dealership was granted in February 1919.
It was soon after, in 1920, that he opened Kane’s Beach in Smith’s Ferry, in an area known as Rocky Point. He was the successor to Collopy’s Beach, which operated there from 1915 to 1919. For more information on Kane's Beach, you may use the Alphabetical Index or enter "Rocky Point- Kane's Beach" into the blog's search field.
While operating Kane’s Beach, along with his electrical and plumbing business, and the Chevrolet dealership, he also served the city as an Alderman-at-Large.
In 1922, he relocated his electrical and plumbing business to 56 Suffolk Street and also operated an appliance and fixtures shop at 112 Suffolk Street.
He held the auto dealership for 3 years, relinquishing it in 1922 when demands for electrical, plumbing and steam fitting work took precedence. In 1923, Patrick Kane auctioned his inventory of appliances to concentrate on electrical and plumbing contracting. In 1925, he did not renew his lease for Kane’s Beach, which then became Wayside Beach under Michael F. O’Hare’s ownership.
1925 was also the year Mr. Kane entered the real estate business, adding to his many business endeavors. His experience visiting many homes in Holyoke as an electrician, along with his collaborations with many contractors, provided him with context in this field. His real estate business lasted until 1932.
P. J. Kane and Company was awarded the contract to rewire the entire Holyoke High School in 1927. Mr. Kane was later employed by the Holyoke Gas & Electric Department (HG&E) for several years. In 1947, he joined forces with 2 sons, James and William, to form a real estate business situated at 270 High Street. He continued working for the HG&E until the mid-1950s.
