Initially, as I was composing the Holyoke radio station WREB blog post, I recalled an advertisement for the National Clothiers and Habadashers that regularly ran on the station. So today, I share a short two-part series on two related stores: the National Pants Store and the National Clothiers & Habadashers, which were located in the High Street business district.
Sidney Shpetner opened the National Pants Store at 368 High Street on November 9, 1939. He had operated a clothing store in Springfield. The store was rather small, containing about 500 square feet of floor space.
Initially, the store sold only men’s trousers at affordable prices. The store welcomed customers to bring in their suit jackets, which would be matched with a pair of trousers sold there. The store also carried work and casual-wear trousers, including woolens, corduroys, and twills.
Within two years, the store added men’s coats, sweaters, and jackets to its line, and in 1942, boys’ clothing was available. The store continued in business until February 1947, when it advertised a removal sale.
In the next chapter, the story of the newly formed National Clothing & Haberdasher will be told, a business that operated for more than a quarter century in Holyoke.
