Broadview Golf Course (1936-1950)

After the December 12, 1936, fire, which destroyed the clubhouse, Joseph Maggi set plans in motion for a new and expanded building. The new clubhouse, to be built on the site of the former, would include men's and women's locker rooms and showers, as well as a dining area. A seating area was installed on top of the building, so onlookers could enjoy both those playing and the spectacular views. The building, completed for the 1937 season, is shown below.

In 1942, Joseph Maggi began employment at the Worthington Pump and Machinery Corporation. He was also envisioning increased use of the course during the off-season to accommodate winter activities, such as installing a ski tow, a toboggan chute from atop the clubhouse, and ice skating.

In 1943, Cornelius J. Haley (also known as Healey) died. It was upon a portion of his 400-acre farm that ran along Jarvis Ave. and Easthampton Road that the golf course was constructed. Two years later, his son, John W. Healy, the farm's successor, died. Michael Healey, another member of the Haley-Healey family and the golf course greenskeeper, died in 1948.

In a 1948 candid interview with the Holyoke Transcript, Joseph Maggi stated that the course's future success would depend on an increase in the number of golfers. He expressed an inverse relationship: those who were busy during good economic times did not have time to play golf.

In October 1950, Mr. Maggi received a building permit to construct a new home on Jarvis Ave. He selected A. R. Green as the building contractor. Mr. Maggi was residing at 1135 Hampden Street at the time.
