The Holyoke Broom Company had announced its move to Chicopee, Massachusetts, in 1932. Edison R. Young was the long-time proprietor of the family-owned Young Broom Company.
The company remained at the Dwight Manufacturing complex until 1936, when it moved to 1892 Riverdale Street in West Springfield, Massachusetts. The company expanded its production to include brooms, whisk brooms, fireplace brooms, brushes, and dry mops. The company also produced commercial brooms for street sweepers.
In 1948, sixteen years after leaving Holyoke, the company returned to the H. P. Hood & Sons dairy building at the corner of Beech and Sargeant Streets.
The company was highly dependent on the broom corn harvest. 1950 proved to be a poor year, so production suffered and prices rose. 1951 was a banner year as 45,000 tons were produced, up from 26,000 tons the year preceding. Most of the broom corn was grown in Oklahoma. New Mexico, Texas, and Illinois. Young Broom Company also relied on a supply of broom corn from Italy, Hungary, and
It typically produced about 2,500 household brooms monthly and 400 industrial brooms, most sold to towns and cities, annually. The company employed a total of 5 employees.
By 1955, the company had moved back to Chicopee to lower Exchange Street in the cold railroad freight depot. In 1959, the company purchased the Ideal Broom Manufacturing Company and absorbed the operation into its new location at 7 Springfield Street in Chicopee.
In 1963, Mr. Young retired from the business that had been a part of his family for 63 years.
