The 1939 merger of Ely Lumber Company and Hampden Lumber Company formed the Hampden-Ely Lumber Company of Springfield. To promote the merged firm, the new company prepared a newspaper advertisement that provided an extensive list of projects completed by the Ely Lumber Company since its corporate organization in 1898. Unquestionably, both the Ely family and their lumber concerns played significant roles in Holyoke's growth and success from the 1860s to nearly 1940. Much attention has historically been given to Casper Ranger and Timothy Merrick, and their roles in the lumber and contracting industry, and rightfully so. Watson Ely stands tall with these icons.
