E Quenneville & Sons

~ State Oficial Headlight Adjusting Station~

Evangeliste and Angelina Quenneville emigrated from Canada to the United States in 1892 and 1894, respectively. On April 23, 1917, Emma Desroches sold to Evangeliste Quenneville a house at 36 North Bridge Street.

The 1920 U.S. Federal Census listed their ages as 49 and 50. They had thirteen children and were living at 36 North Bridge Street.

In July 1922, Evangeliste Quenneville received a building permit to construct a two-story brick and cement garage adjacent to his home. The anticipated construction cost was $6,000.

36 North Bridge Street was the one-time home of E. Quenneville & Sons Garage and E. Quenneville Trucking. The family business dates back to the early 1920s, and the property remained in the Quenneville family until the mid-1990s.

Mr. Quenneville was listed in the 1923 Holyoke City Directory as working for J. J. Kennedy & Company as a millwright. Three of his sons were working in different paper mills, and a daughter worked at U. S. Envelope Company.

Around 1924, Quenneville and Son was formed by Evangeliste and his son, Armand. The business offered local and long-haul trucking services, manufactured concrete blocks, and provided sand and gravel.

A tragic work-related fire occurred on August 9, 1924, which claimed the life of Armand Quenneville the following day.

Evangeliste Quenneville was also the President of the Ward 1 Improvement Society. He organized candidates' nights, inviting those running for office to speak about their qualifications and platforms. Members of the society also met to discuss items of importance to their neighborhood.

Three other siblings, Sylvio, Rene, and Levi, joined the renamed Quenneville and Sons business shortly after their brother's death.

A 1930 advertisement showed the business was also a "Brake & Light Inspection Station #1013." Additional services were offered, including the sale of gas and oil, along with car repairs. Later, auto body work was added.

After Evangeliste Quenneville died in 1953, family members, Edward and Sylvio, continued to operate the business.

Sylvio retired in 1964. No other information was discovered regarding the continued existence of this business. The real estate was transferred from the estate of Archille Quenneville to Thomas Costello in 1995.
