The Matter Hatter Boutique was one of several retail clothing shops in the area that emerged in the late 1960s and 1970s. Fashion trends were changing, and these shops offered casual and informal styles to teens and soon-to-be teens. Bell-bottom trousers, jeans, wide belts, loose-fitting clothing, tie dyed shirts, and "mod" clothes were in vogue.
The Mad Hatter Boutique opened at 291 Maple Street between Suffolk and Appleton in 1970. No grand opening celebration or news coverage was discovered for this event. The owners were husband and wife, Jack and Sandy Henderson. It did make a lasting impression on Holyoke's retail scene during its short existence.
The shop sold clothing and was a sales site for purchasing tickets to musical acts performing at civic centers in Springfield, Worcester, and elsewhere. It also participated in area fashion shows, helped with fundraisers, and promoted its clothing line.
In December 1973, The Mad Hatter Boutique relocated to 290 Maple Street, across from its original location. This provided the store with additional retail space.
In May 1975, the Mad Hatter Boutique celebrated its 5th anniversary with a two-week store-wide sale. No further news articles were found after this, so the store may have closed shortly thereafter.
