David McCormick -Wall & McCormick (Pt.2- 1888-1901)

The stoneworking business venture of Jackson & McCormick concluded in October 1888, and the new partnership of Wall & McCormick started the following month.

John Wall was born in Ireland in 1853. At the age of 17, he moved to the United States. He was a stone cutter by trade. He worked during the 1880s for John Marra, a stonemason. Mr. McCormick had also previously worked and learned the trade from Mr. Marra.

In 1889, the Wall & McCormick concern relocated to Appleton Street at the southeast corner of Winter Street. John Keough purchased the 318 Main Street Jackson & McCormick property and moved the old Connecticut River depot to this site.

Wall & McCormick added a telephone line to its business office. Its complete telephone number was 6-2. Yes, it was the early days of telephones and telephone numbers.

1890- J. H. Cook Holyoke monument Works- pedestal for an imported cemetery statue

1891- Holyoke Water Power Co., Cabot Street Mill- blue stone

1891- Ward 3 Engine house- cut stone work

1891- Y.M.C.A. building, High Street- cut stone work

1892- Guyotte Brothers' Hotel addition- stonework

1893- Linden Mill- stone capping on roof

1894- Precious Blood Parochial School- stonework

1894- Parks Business block, Westfield- stone carvings

1895- Robert Cowle apt. block, Jackson St. near High, stonework

1895- William Morrison apt. block, Avon Place, stonework

1896- Holyoke High School- stone suppliers

1898- Senior block, High & Appleton Streets, cut stone

In 1899, David McCormick moved his family to the Toomey & Shea block at 225 Chestnut Street opposite the Holyoke Public Library. At the end of the 19th century, the business encountered financial difficulties and, in 1901, declared bankruptcy. The partnership was dissolved, and Mr. McCormick reorganized under David McCormick & Company, the topic of the following chapter.
