S. Marks & Co. (Pt. 4- 1968-2007)

The late 1960s saw the passing of Louis Marks, son of the company’s co-founder, Simon Marks and brother of Meyer Marks, also a co-founder.

The company continued to expand its product line, introducing antiquing materials for those wishing to restore older items. Over time, basement waterproofing products were carried, and a paint-and-wallpaper color-matching computer was purchased to better assist customers. S. Marks & Co. also carried several window treatments, including shades and Venetian blinds, as well as stained glass and wall murals.

In 1989, Helene and Sherman Marks merited the title of Wallcovering Consultants, as experts in the wallcovering industry. By this time, the company’s wallcovering department had over 400 sample books and 200 patterns in inventory from 30 national distributors.

Helene and Sherman Marks continued to operate the store through the 1990s and into the 2000s. The year 2003 would mark the Marks family’s 100th anniversary in the painting and wallcovering business.

On January 12, 2007, S. Marks and Company closed its doors one final time. Enjoying retirement was on the owners’ plans.

The building went through a succession of owners, some of whom attempted to rehabilitate the building for use. In 2026, the current owners completed a restoration of the third and fourth floors, creating 14 studio apartments with new finishes. There was also one retail space renovated in the building, the former long-time home of S. Marks & Company.
