S. Marks & Co. (Pt. 3- 1960-1967)

It was the outset of the 1960s, and S. Marks & Company was approaching its 60th anniversary, having been established by Simon and Meyer Marks in 1903.

Sherman Marks was well established in the business. He was named a Director of the Springfield Chapter of the Paint and Wallpaper Distributors of America. Mr. Marks was also named President of the Holyoke Junior Chamber of Commerce in 1962.

The paint industry was evolving to develop paints with one-coat coverage and a less noxious odor.

On the night of January 9, 1967, a fire in the basement led to the business’s temporary relocation to 101 High Street, at the corner of Lyman Street. Firefighters used a water-and-detergent combination to create a foam, which deprived flames of oxygen. This helped contain the spread of the flames and extinguish the fire. The basement storage area and the first-floor store were most affected. The second and third stories were affected by smoke damage.

Three months after the fire, the business reopened at 95 Maple Street. The store was extensively remodeled, and the first-floor retail area was expanded.
