Daniels Brothers (Appleton & Newton Streets) 1930-1940

Although restaurants were predominant at the Dougherty-built, and later William Bosworth's new building at the southeast corner of Appleton and Newton, there was a time when a dry goods store occupied the main premises. This is the story of the Daniels Brothers, a retailer of fabrics and related materials.

In 1928, the Daniels brothers, Henry and Charles, were in their early 30s and residing at 73 Belvidere Ave. in Holyoke. This was also the year they began operating a cotton, silk, and wool mill-end and remnant store at 182 Appleton Street. In 1931, the business incorporated, adding David Borowsky as a shareholder.

The business continued on Appleton at the corner of Race until October 31, 1933. On November 1, the shop opened in a much larger space at 260 Appleton Street, the former location of William Bosworth's Spa Restaurant. The store added bedding and blankets to its inventory. Services such as upholstering and furniture repair were also added.

There was some movement regarding ownership of the real estate. Joseph Ranger had acquired the real estate in 1930 from the Franklin Savings Institution. In 1936, the mortgage was in default, and this bank foreclosed and sold the real estate to Harry E. George. The Great Depression was a period of real estate volatility.

In 1940, Daniels Bros. Textiles moved to Springfield. The space would not remain vacant for long, as several taverns and restaurants would lease the attractive space over the next half-century. These stories will unfold in subsequent installments of Appleton & Newton Streets.
