Charles S. Childs, shoe and boot shop (1879-1886)

Charles S. Childs was born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, on December 23, 1853, the son of James Root and Mary Ann (Shandrew) Childs. The family moved to Springfield during the 1860s, where his father established the J. R. Childs shoe store. When Charles S. Childs was in his late teens, he worked in the shoe manufacturing business at 346 Main Street in Springfield.

In 1878, he was listed as a clerk at his father’s shoe store, then located at 382 Main Street in Springfield. Two of his brothers would also work in the establishment.

In 1879. Charles S. Childs moved to Holyoke and resided at 275 West Dwight Street. He opened his own shoe-and-boot business at 215 High Street. Around 1884, he, his wife, Cora M. (Ballard) Childs, and 4 children moved to 69 Lincoln Street.

On Sunday, May 9, 1886, Charles S. Childs died at the age of 32. The store’s inventory was sold the following month to C. W. Ingalls, a shoe store owner located at 59 Dwight Street.

This short account was provided to distinguish Charles S. Childs from the later longtime Thomas S. Childs shoe store family, which purchased the Charles A. Corser shoe shop in 1889. Both the history of the C. A. Corser and Thomas S. Childs shoe stores will be explored in the chapters to follow.
