The New York - New England Company (Away from the Canals, Edition 7)

Another manufacturing operation in a residential neighborhood was the New York-New England Company (NY-NE Co.). This business was located at the southwest corner of Ely and West Street in The Flats section of Holyoke. On April 23, 1909, NY-NE Co. purchased the property from Charles Corser. Its formal address was 76 Ely Street.

The corporation was formed on April 5, 1909, to produce photograph papers, calendars, cardboard, and mounting boards, all by-products of the paper industry.

This was likely one of Holyoke's smallest paper companies, employing 50-60.

On March 2, 1912, the company announced plans to enlarge the mill. The addition would be 26 ft. x 20 ft. and two stories. Due to increased product demand, the company had outgrown its present space. V. V. Goddard was the contractor selected.

In 1918, employees were covered by life insurance, with the company fully paying the premiums. Coverage increased the longer one was employed.

In 1920, another major remodel of the plant took place. All work was done on the interior, including creating a cellar space. Howes and Hawes were the architects, and S. O. Hoyt was the contractor.

The business produced a new line of paper products in 1930, which was favorably received by the trade.

The Holyoke City Directory shows that in about 1932, the NY-NE Co. moved its operations to the third-level canal near Sargeant Street, where its sister corporation, Taylor-Logan, was located.

John Adie, the company president since 1918. died in February 1941. He was also president of the Taylor-Logan Company in Holyoke.

A month after Mr. Adie's death, a news account stated that the real estate of NY-NE Co. at 76 Ely Street was in foreclosure, and an auction was scheduled for April 22, 1941.

Mechanics Bank was the successful bidder at the auction. In 1943, the property was sold to Downing and Downing Inc. and to J. T. Downing Realty Corp two years later..

During the 1940s, Paper Service Co. (1941-1943) and Marvellum Company's warehouse (1947-1950) occupied the 76 Ely Street building. Package Service Inc. operated in the building from 1950 to 1960 before moving to Agawam, MA. Various other businesses followed.

J. T. Downing Realty Corp. sold the former New York-New England Company building to the Holyoke Redevelopment Authority on August 31, 1972. Subsequently, it was razed and the property is now part of the Holyoke Housing Authority's Rosary Towers.
